The General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF) is the civilian workforce of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), which functions under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. BRO is primarily responsible for the construction, development, and maintenance of roads, runways, and other strategic infrastructure in border and remote areas across India, particularly in the Northern and Eastern regions. GREF personnel serve in challenging operational environments including high-altitude terrains, hilly areas, and remote forward locations that are critical to national security and connectivity. The organisation recruits Indian male nationals to fill various technical and support trades essential for its engineering and administrative functions. Posts such as Draughtsman, Store Keeper Technical, Operator Communication, and Operator Excavating Machinery are central to GREF's operational capacity, supporting civil engineering works, equipment operations, communication networks, and logistical management across projects. Selected candidates are inducted at GREF Centre, Dighi Camp, Pune, where they undergo initial training before being deployed to projects anywhere in India. Service conditions include governed terms under Central Civil Services Rules and certain provisions of Army Act 1950. Personnel are entitled to allowances including pay, DA, HRA, transport, hard and risk allowance, free rations, clothing, free single accommodation, and benefits such as NPS, LTC, and Group Insurance.

Applicants must be Indian male nationals only; female candidates are not eligible. A candidate must be a citizen of India, or a person in whose favour an eligibility certificate has been issued by the Government of India, or a Gorkha of Indian domicile who produces a Permanent Residence Certificate issued by the competent authority. Educational qualifications vary by post. Draughtsman requires 10+2 with Science subjects plus a two-year certificate in Architecture or Draughtsmanship from a recognised institute, or a National Trade Certificate for Draughtsman Civil with one year practical experience. Hindi Typist requires 10+2 from a recognised board and a Hindi typing speed of 30 words per minute on computer. Store Keeper Technical requires 10+2 from a recognised board with store-keeping knowledge relating to vehicles or engineering equipment. Operator Communication requires Matriculation plus a Wireless Operator or Radio Mechanic certificate from ITI or equivalent, or a Defence Trade Certificate with Radio Technology knowledge. Operator Excavating Machinery requires Matriculation plus a heavy motor vehicle driving licence for Dozer/Excavator with six months driving experience, or a Class II Course certificate in OEM from Defence. Electrician requires Matriculation plus an Auto Electrician certificate from ITI with one year experience, or an Electrician Class 2 Course certificate from Defence. Candidates must possess all qualifications as on the closing date of application. Those awaiting final examination results are not eligible.

Vacancies are reserved as per central government norms. Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes candidates get 5 years age relaxation; OBC candidates get 3 years. PwBD candidates get 10 years age relaxation and vacancies are identified post-wise as per relevant government orders. Ex-Servicemen are allowed to deduct their period of service from actual age plus 3 additional years, with further relaxation for OBC/SC/ST. Ex-Agniveers receive 3 years age relaxation (first batch 5 years). SC/ST/OBC/EWS candidates qualifying on unreserved standards are accommodated in general vacancies; those qualifying on relaxed standards are counted against reserved vacancies. OBC certificates must be in Non-Creamy Layer format. Candidates applying under ESM or PwBD categories are exempted from the Physical Efficiency Test.
